Marsha Ambrosius on being a wife and a mother: “It opened my heart in a way that I didn’t anticipate”

by

Dez BillupsMarsha Ambrosius celebrates her 41st birthday today, and two of her greatest blessings are her daughter Nyla and her husband Dez.

The five-time Grammy nominee named her upcoming album — her first since 2014’s Friends & Lovers — after Nyla, who arrived in December of 2016.

Ambrosius tells ABC Radio that getting married and having a child completely transformed her life.

“Embarking on the journey of motherhood and being a wife, it opened my heart in a way that I didn’t anticipate — in a very good way,” she says. “Like, finding the space to create from a completely innocent standpoint. Like, I get to live my life all over again through my daughter.”

The former member of Floetry is looking forward to enjoying many of her favorite movies with Nyla.

“Like, she can see The Goonies, and Labyrinth, and Star Wars, and all these movies I grew up on. ET,Close Encounters, for the first time, and I’m so excited,” she says. “Like, just watching her lets me do this all over again.”

Ambrosius’ new single is “Old Times,” a song which reflects her new outlook on life since becoming a mother.

“So musically, my heart opened way more than I absolutely believed it could, and the empathy level that I feel for what’s going on in the world as a parent now is just so much more apparent,” she tells ABC Radio.

Ambrosius’ third studio album, Nyla, will be released later this year.
