Marsha Ambrosius Respects Beyonce’s Power Moves; Recalls Favorite VMA Moment

by

Cliff Lipson/CBSMarsha Ambrosius is looking forward to seeing the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, especially since Beyonce leads all nominees with eight nods, including one for Video of the Year for “Drunk in Love.”

The singer expressed a high level of respect for Bey’s game-changing tactics like releasing her self-titled visual album without any warning.

“The last album was a phenomenal way to show true power in this industry as a black woman, who has been doing it at the top of her game since day one and never holding that back and adding fuel to fire really, as she should,” Marsha told ABC News Radio. “Someone on that platform and that pedestal, the people hold so high, they expect so much that she shouldn’t conform to the norm.”

Marsha believes that Beyonce realized: “‘I shouldn’t be waiting for August 12 for my album to come out.'” After Jay Z‘s wife “effortlessly” took her “power back,” that’s when Marsha imagined Beyonce saying to herself, “You’re getting videos to every song that I’m ever doing and I’m putting this album out and I’m going right on tour with my husband at that.”

“Double checks. Power moves,” she says of Beyonce, who will be the recipient of the 2014 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs.

But aside from Beyonce’s success, Marsha has a fondness for the annual ceremony. The singer, who was one-half of the group Floetry, recalled her favorite memory from previous VMAs.

“When I was nominated, Floetry was nominated for ‘Floetic’ the video and I remember sitting [there] like, ‘This is insane,'” she recalled. “And just to hear the nomination called in that moment — that was the same year that Beyonce performed ‘Crazy in Love’ for the first time live — and I was like, ‘I’m really here, I’m not here to spectate, I’m here for a reason.'”

Although the duo would go home empty-handed, Marsha didn’t seem to mind. “Oh we lost to Coldplay, that was the best moment of my life in that moment, I lost to Coldplay, to say it sounded amazing,” she says.

The MTV VMAs air Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Forum in Inglewood, California.
