Mary J. Blige to be honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 BET Awards

ABC/Craig SjodinMary J. Blige will receive special recognition at the 2019 BET Awards: She’s this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. 

As this year’s honoree, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul joins a short list of legendary artists who’ve also received the prestigious honor, including Whitney Houston, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. The award was initially introduced in 2001 to recognize veteran musicians for their tremendous contributions to their respective genres. 

Over the course of her decades-long career, Blige has not only earned nine Grammy awards and eight multi-platinum albums, but she’s also remained a figure of inspiration and empowerment for fans on a global scale.

At just 18, the vocal powerhouse became Uptown Records youngest and first female artist. Since then, she’s helped redefine contemporary R&B with chart-topping hits like “Be Without You”, “No More Drama” and “Family Affair.”

Most recently, Blige made history at the 2018 Academy Awards as the first double nominee in the acting and music categories, scoring nods for for Best Song and Best Supporting Actress for Netflix’s Mudbound.

As previously announced, this year’s list of performers for the BET Awards include Cardi BDJ KhaledMigosH.E.R.Lil Nas XLizzo and many more. The ceremony airs live on BET on June 23 at 8pm ET.
