Meek Mill responds to backlash over Kobe Bryant lyric in leaked song

by

Miller Mobley Meek Mill‘s latest lyrics about the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant has social media in a uproar.

It all began after a snippet of a forthcoming song with Lil Baby was leaked online Wednesday, with Meek spitting a controversial line about the NBA star. “And if I ever lack, I’m going out with my choppa it’ll be another Kobe,” Meek raps.

The song arrives just weeks after the one-year anniversary of the fatal Los Angeles-area helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Kobe, his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others.

Fans who felt Meek’s lyrics were insensitive and inappropriate began to blast the Philly rapper on Twitter.

“Meek Mill really thought that verse was acceptable?” tweeted one fan, while another wrote, “Meek Mill been a clown but too say that line about Kobe and a Choppa [during] BLACK HISTORY MONTH??”

Another hinted that Kobe was a better rapper than Meek, sharing a clip Brian McKnight‘s 1998 single, “Hold Me Back,” which featured a verse from Kobe himself. “Meek Mill will never have bars like Kobe had bars,” the fan tweeted.

After seeing the backlash, Meek explained he was simply doing his job as a rapper and influencer of music and culture.

“Somebody promo a narrative and y’all follow it…. y’all internet antics cannot stop me ….[stuff] like zombie land or something! Lol,” Meek tweeted. “They paying to influence y’all now. It’s almost like mind control ‘wake up.'”
