Will Heath/NBCMegan Thee Stallion made her Saturday Night Live debut a memorable one by delivering more than just musical performance, she came with a powerful message.
During the Chris Rock-hosted Season 46 premiere of SNL on Saturday, the 25-year-old rapper performed her smash single “Savage” and from the very beginning made a statement by having the phrase “Protect Black Women” projected into pattern that filled the walls of the stage.
Then, just before the end of her performance, the music stopped and was replaced with the sound of gunshots as bullet holes were displayed on the screen, followed by audio clips from various activists.
First up, was a clip from Malcolm X‘s famous 1962 speech which read, “The most disrespected, unprotected, neglected person in America is the Black woman. Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair, the color of your skin, the shape of your nose? Who taught you to hate yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet?”
Next, was a snippet of Black Lives Matter activist Tamika Mallory, who called out Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron over his handling of the Breonna Taylor case.
“Daniel Cameron is no different than the sellout negroes that sold our people into slavery,” her words relayed.
Then, Megan took a moments to say a few words of her own.
“We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women. Because at the end of the day, we need our Black women,” she petitioned. “We need to protect our Black men and stand up for our Black men,Because at the end of the day, we’re tired of seeing hashtags about our Black men.”
Megan also performed her recently released single “Don’t Stop” with Young Thug.
