Melanie Fiona gets emotional in the video for her new single, “I Tried.”

In the Carmen Murray-directed clip, posted on YouTube, a bruised Melanie finds herself locked inside a glass box within a dark room, which represents her feelings on social issues like domestic violence, mass shootings, police brutality, rape, racial inequality, and human trafficking. As she watches in helpless despair, various real-life headlines are displayed, ranging from Michael Brown‘s murder to Eric Garner‘s chokehold death, both at the hands of police, to Sandra Bland‘s hanging while in police custody.

“It is important for me to channel the ideas and concepts I am passionate about into my music and my art… As an artist with a social platform, I feel it is my responsibility to do so,” Melanie tells Complex.  “The video for ‘I Tried’ is a tribute to the fight in which we all witness and experience both internally and externally in the world daily. The conversation of important issues should not end when we turn the TV off. I hope this visual sparks emotion, thought, dialogue, reflection, and ultimately, positive change.”

“I Tried” is lifted from Melanie’s third album, due in early 2016. The singer’s effort will include her lead single, “Bite the Bullet.”
