Michael Ealy Reveals He Turned Down the Opportunity to Be Beyoncé’s Leading Man

by

ABC/Image Group LAActor Micheal Ealy is revealing he was in line to be Beyoncé‘s leading man in her “Irreplaceable” video, but says he felt compelled to turn down the Queen Bey.

On Wednesday’s Live with Kelly, the Secrets and Lies star tells Kelly and guest host Megyn Kelly how he reacted to the opportunity to star in Beyoncé’s video.

“The first time I was asked to do a Beyoncé video it was for a song called, ‘Irreplaceable.’ And my first instinct was, ‘Absolutely! Yeah just play the song,'” he said. “So they played the song and I was like…”Could you play that one more time please?’ And they played it one more time and I was like, ‘Yeah, no, no, no, I can’t do it. I’m not available.'”

However, Ealy admits to rejecting the opportunity simply because he didn’t want to be a villain. “It was a song about a woman kicking her man out of her house,” he said. “And he was a jerk. It was like, he was a jerk so he deserved it.”

The actor, who later was offered another opportunity be Beyoncé’s leading man in her 2008 “Halo” video, says he refused the pop star’s first request because he couldn’t afford to tarnish his career.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to be associated with that for the rest of my career. I didn’t want to be associated with that. I’m the “to the left” guy,'” he said.

Secrets and Lies airs Sunday nights at 10 p.m. on ABC.
