Mike Epps to play Richard Pryor in HBO L.A. Lakers series; ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ announces new series regulars, & more

Mike Epps has been tapped to play Richard Pryor in the forthcoming HBO L.A. Lakers series, Deadline has learned.

Based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s, the yet-titled series follows the “professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers,” a team revered in sports history. Epps joins Carina Conti, who will play singer Paula AbdulMax E. Williams, who will portray actor Jack Nicholson, and Mariama Diallo, who takes on the role of Iman, the legendary supermodel whose first husband was Laker Spencer Haywood. A release date for the series has not been revealed.

In other news, Power Book II: Ghost has promoted several of its key players. Paton AshbrookBerto Colon, and Alix Lapri have all been announced as series regulars for the second season of Power Book II. Additionally, Lahmard Tate, first seen in season six of Power, has been tapped to reprise his recurring role of Kamaal Tate, brother to Rashad Tate, in the upcoming season. Starz has yet to share a return date for Power Book II: Ghost.

Finally, Variety is reporting that Doom Patrol star Karen Obilom has been picked for a lead role in the LeBron James produced House Party reboot. She joins Jorge Lendeborg Jr.Tosin Cole and DC Young Fly who were all previously announced. The original 1990 movie, written and directed by Reginald Hudlin, starred Kid ‘n Play‘s Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin as two high school students who decide to throw an epic house party. That film also starred Tisha Martin-CampbellMartin LawrenceA.J. Johnson, and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, among others. A release date for the new House Party has not been disclosed.
