by

Honorary doctor of music degrees were handed out to several artists to include Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake Saturday at Berklee College of Music’s commencement.

The music icons were on hand as over 1,000 graduates from 67 countries and 47 U.S. states received degrees.

During her acceptance speech the multi-award winning Missy Elliot said:

“There will be ups and downs — prepare for that. As long as you are breathing, it is never too late. Don’t forget that. You have come too far to quit.”

Missy was her personal ups and downs, including fighting back from illness. She encouraged graduates to “be patient through the struggle but to never give up on themselves.”

At the ceremony, Berklee President Roger H. Brown also presented a honorary doctor of music degree to music Alex Lacamoire, a 1995 alum, who delivered the commencement address before some 7000 attendees.

And, among other things, Justin Timberlake told the graduates:

“You’re defined by what you define failure as. It’s not a thing if it leads you to your success. It’s all part of the journey.”
