According to TV Line, the Rosewood alum is joining the season three cast of The Resident, where he will play Dr. Barrett Cain, a “intimidating neurosurgeon.”

Cain, described as “potentially vengeful,” is brought on to help turn around the hospital’s fiances. The doctor is said to think of himself as a “superman physician” who is “capable of curing crippling diseases.” He is also both charming and “utterly ruthless in his quest for money and power.”

Chestnut’s new role comes after his NBC series The Enemy Within was cancelled in May after one season. Prior to that, the actor had the starring role on FOX’s Rosewood, which ran for two seasons.

Season three of The Resident premieres Tuesday, September 24 at 8 ET., right before the sixth and final season of Empire
