Musicians Andra Day and Raphael Saadiq react to their Golden Globe nominations

by

Takashi SeidaGrammy-nominated singer Andra Day is now officially a Golden Globe nominee as well.

Andra just earned a nomination for her portrayal of legendary singer Billie Holiday in the upcoming Hulu Original film, The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Day is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama in the Lee Daniels-directed film, and Best Original Song for “Tigress & Tweed.”

“God is great. No other words can describe how I feel,” wrote Day in a statement. “[I’m] grateful to…my co-stars, the entire cast and production, to Hulu, and the whole team that believes and is working tirelessly for this. Thank you to the voters, outlets and fans that support us and Billie. Y’all are a big blessing.”

“Tigress & Tweed” was co-written by veteran singer-songwriter-producer Raphael Saadiq, who said he feels “honored” to be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“I’m honored that the HFPA has recognized our song “Tigress & Tweed” with a Golden Globe nomination, as well as Andra Day’s brilliant portrayal of Billie Holiday,” said Saadiq in a statement. “Her musical legacy remains vital and powerful, and co-writing the song with Andra gave me the opportunity to pay homage to Holiday’s enduring artistry. I am truly blessed to work with Day, director Lee Daniels and the team that brought this chapter of Billie’s story to the screen.”

Other musical artists nominated for Best Original Song include R&B singer H.E.R. for her Judas and the Black Messiah anthem, “Fight For You,” which arrives Friday. One Night In Miami star Leslie Odom, Jr. received two nods — for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture Drama and for co-writing “Speak Now.”

The Golden Globes will air live on Feb. 28 at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC.
