On Tuesday, Nicki shared a video on Twitter, prompting Lil Nas to propose a song on which he wanted to collaborate with Nicki. While replying to fans in the comments, he revealed why he’s never claimed his Barbz status until he admitted it last month.
“I didn’t want people to know I was gay, tbh,” the “Old Town Road” crooner replied to a Barbz fan page, which claimed to have always known he was a fan. “People will assume if you had an entire fan page dedicated to Nicki you are gay and the rap/music industry ain’t exactly built or accepting of gay men yet,” he went on.
When Nicki caught wind of the news, she sent Lil Nas X a congratulatory tweet.
“It was a bit of a sting when you denied being a barb, but I understand,” Minaj wrote. “Congratulations on building up your confidence to speak your truth.”
Lil Nas X responded to “The generous queen,” saying, “I love u, and I’m sorry I did that in a time where you were already getting so much bandwagon hate.”
He continued, “I felt so bad, hoping u wouldn’t see my denial. I was just so afraid of people finding out about me and losing everything before I even got a chance.”
