Opal Tometi, Co-founder Of Black Lives Matter: ‘I Do This Because We Deserve To Live’ Opal Tometi was featured in a recent Guardian article where she explained how she became one of the founders of Black Lives Matter and how childhood shaped her into the activist she is today. Tometi came from a Nigerian family, who lived outside Phoenix, went to school with white kids, and spent a lot of time with other immigrants within her community. Tometi grew up learning that helping each other was the key to sustaining a healthy, happy community. This led her to give of herself after the death of Trayvon Martin. Tometi, along with Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors, helps get out BLM’s message which is one that has been misconstrued. The ladies spend more time reminding people that BLM is about being involved in the community, pooling resources, dismantling structural racism, and fighting for the right to live. How do you view the BLM Movement?
