According to the Los Angeles Times, the entertainer has joined Kristen StewartCara Delevigne, and model and author Caroline de Maigret in Chanel’s new handbag campaign.

Williams’ addition will make him the first man to appear in a handbag advertisement for the French fashion house.

In an interview with WWD, Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld explained that Chanel’s Gabrielle bag, as worn by Pharrell, can be worn in “many different circumstances” including by a man.

“It’s not very feminine in the sense of being chichi,” he said.

Yet for Pharrell, who’s been seen wearing Chanel on the red carpet, being featured in a high-end ad campaign was something he never would have imagined.

“I was like a nerdy little black kid on a skateboard. So looking at high-end fashion was something that I really didn’t understand in the very beginning. And then I realized, slowly but surely, man, this is amazing,” Pharrell said after the Chanel show last week.

“And although there’s mostly the perception that it’s for women, I just started to see, OK, as a man I can wear some of this. So I would wear sunglasses here, or a jacket there.”

The new Chanel campaign featuring Pharrell Williams is set to be released on April 3.
