One of the most talked about moments of Sunday’s Grammy Awards came from a certain fashion accessory that Pharrell Williams wore, which later became a trending topic on social media. Now, the hitmaker is explaining what prompted him to wear that massive tan hat.
“It’s Vivienne Westwood,” Pharrell said during a post-interview at the ceremony. “It’s a Buffalo hat. This gentleman by the name of Malcolm McLaren [designed it]. [He has a] huge history. And I just liked it.”
McLauren was a U.K. designer and former beau of Westwood’s. He’s also a legendary punk rock impresario, who gave the world the Sex Pistols.
Pharrell also responded to a tweet from the fast-food restaurant Arby’s, which read: “Hey @Pharrell, can we have our hat back? #GRAMMYs.” The Arby’s logo is a stylized cowboy hat.
As for winning Producer of the Year and Record of the Year for Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky,” Pharrell said, “[It’s] humbling man. It’s pretty crazy, like I didn’t expect any of this.”
