Following a stellar year, Pharrell Williams has been named GQ magazine’s Hitmaker of the Year 2013, the publication announced on Tuesday.

The producer was recognized for hit songs this year, which included Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” featuring T.I. and Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky.”

Pharrell explained the concept for those songs was to encourage people to unwind and relax. “Both songs are for people who need a break,” Pharrell says in the GQ profile. “There’s a lot of f**ked-up travesty in the world. Sometimes you just need a Hallmark card. Sometimes you just need to shake your ass.”

The famed producer, who also contributed to Pusha T‘s My Name Is My Name and Miley CyrusBangerz, became the first artist in nearly four years to hold the #1 and #2 spots at the same time on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky.”
