Kevin Winter/Getty Images for NCLROne of Prince‘s former girlfriends, Charlene Friend, who dated the music legend during the 1990s, recently talked to People about the late icon’s strange behavior during their time together.

“He would sometimes stay up for five days at a time without sleep, food or even water, going nonstop back and forth to the studio,” she said. “I had to sneak in catnaps to keep from passing out from exhaustion,” she said.

When Friend asked the artist how he was able to go without from sleep on a consistent basis, he reportedly told her, “Angel food. Food of the spirit, not of the flesh.”

Friend, who Prince sued in 2003 for trying to sell keepsakes that he gave her, told People that while she never saw Prince doing drugs, fans should expect to hear more news in the coming months about the artist that may shock them.

“Even his death has become something of a mystery in the way that it’s still unfolding…I’m sure in the months to come even more information will come out that people will find unnerving and unsettling,” she said.

Friend also claims in People that Prince’s half-brother, Alfred Jackson, explained that the entertainer’s sleepless nights were because of his penchant for cocaine.

Prince died April 21 from an overdose of the painkiller fentanyl.
