Regina King among ‘People’ magazine’s People of the Year for 2020: This is the path I was supposed to be on

by

Austin Hargrave for PEOPLEActress Regina King has been named one of People magazine’s People of the Year.

The magazine unveiled their year-end issue on Wednesday with four separate covers, including George Clooney, Selena Gomez and Dr. Anthony Fauci, who were all honored for their positive impact this year.

King ended 2019 with an Oscar win for her role in the romantic drama If Beale Street Could Talk, and returned in 2020 to win an Emmy in September for starring in HBO’s Watchmen

“I feel like this is the path I was supposed to be on,” the 49-year-old actress tells People. “I don’t necessarily see it as a renewed purpose.”

“I have a little more power now, in my choices, and in my ability to amplify a message,” she continues. “I have things I’m very passionate about. And I feel very lucky to be able to use my art and my voice collectively.”

In addition to bringing diverse characters and content to life, King has also used her platform to encourage voter registration during the 2020 election and to address the ongoing uncertainly due to the pandemic.

The actress has also used her voice to call for support of marginalized communities and correction of civil injustices against Black people, which she famously addressed on Emmy night, wearing a shirt featuring the image of slain 26-year-old Breonna Taylor.

“I had the opportunity to not wear a gown and … a chance to visually show why it’s so important to vote down the ballot,” says King. “How could I not use it?”

Up next, King will make her directorial debut in the upcoming film One Night in Miami, due out December 25 in theaters and on Amazon Prime January 15.
