Rihanna‘s decision to wear a denim two-piece while performing on Saturday Night Live was a big deal for Giovanna Flores, an up-and-coming designer who spent two days handcrafting the outfit.

During an interview with The Fader, Flores recalls Rihanna’s stylist Mel Ottenber contacting her about her online collection, which has since garnered a huge response thanks to Rihanna’s co-sign.

“It’s been really overwhelming,” Flores says. “Everyone is super proud. My stuff is a little quirky and crazy, so even my good friends were like, ‘Holy sh**. It was super validating.”

After watching Rihanna perform on the SNL finale, Flores adds: “I was really happy with it! I was super excited, and the whole performance was amazing. She’s awesome. It was the first time I was making my clothes for a real person, other than a model or myself.”

It seems Rihanna has a knack for breaking new talent — back in April, she gave a young songwriter Bibi Bourelly her big break by using her song “B***h Better Have My Money.”
