Robin Thicke says the unexpected death of his father rattled his soul and inspired new music

by

ABC/Fred LeeRobin Thicke is turning his pain into purpose.

On Wednesday, the “Lost Without You” crooner joined Zane Lowe of Beats 1 Radio to share his new single, “Testify.”  He also delved into the impact of losing his father, actor and composer Alan Thicke, back in 2016.

“I thought I had an album and these songs that I wanted to put out. Then when that happened, it was something I wasn’t expecting and it just rattled my soul,” Robin explained.

Thicke’s latest effort finds the singer in the midst of a vulnerable period, with lyrics revealing the difficulty Robin experienced following Alan’s death.

“It’s cathartic just to be able to say it and then let it live, as opposed to in the middle of a conversation or a quote,” the 41-year-old explained. “Once you put it into song form, then it can live forever.”

“And so the message in the song is really about the hope and the light at the end of that tunnel when you feel that you lost or you feel that you don’t know what to do next,” Robin added.

Alan Thicke, who starred in the 1980s sitcom Growing Pains, died at age 69 after suffering a heart attack while playing hockey with his youngest son, Carter.
