Roddy Ricch shares inspiration behind his hit single, The Box

by

Scott Dudelson/Getty ImagesBillboard‘s latest cover star Roddy Ricch has been in celebratory mode since just winning his first Grammy award for best rap performance on Nipsey Hussle‘s “Racks in the Middle.” His debut album, Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, debuted at #1, solidifying his stance as one of hip-hop’s hottest new emerging artists.

Speaking with Billboard, the Los Angeles rapper played a game of Fishing for Answers during his cover shoot, sharing his favorite memory of Kobe Bryant, the best rappers in LA and the inspiration behind his hit single, “The Box.”

Kobe’s 81-point game win against the Toronto Raptors in 2006 is Roddy’s best memory of the late basketball legend.

“Me and my grandpa watched that game together,” Roddy tells Billboard. “It was a crazy moment.”

Roddy also recalls the morning he made “The Box.”

“It was like six o’clock in the morning when I was in New York and I was already like eight, nine songs in,” he says.  “I kind of just wanted to keep the vibes going so I made the song.  Then I put the little door noise at the end, after the song was done. They thought it was finished, but I knew it wasn’t done.”

“My inspiration was my life, I guess you could say,” adds Roddy.

On the other hand, Roddy declined to answer which album was better, Lil Wayne‘s The Carter II or Future‘s Dirty Sprite 2? — which is a hard question to answer, anyway.   But for the best rappers in LA right now, he named Kendrick Lamar, himself and YG, in that order.
