Say what? Tracee Ellis Ross says she’s reuniting her ‘Girlfriends’ cast on ‘black-ish’

ABC/Image Group LATracee Ellis Ross has a major surprise for her die-hard Girlfriends fans.

In an new Instagram post, Ross revealed that she’s bringing back the series’ core cast members for a “feminist” themed episode of black-ish.

“We have an extra special episode of black-ish,” Ellis sings in the video. “And it’s a feminist episode and I brought in some back up from some of my girlfriends.”

The video then pans the room where Jill Marie JonesGolden Brooks and Persia White all smile and make faces in the camera.

Ellis then jumps back in the frame adding, “What?! Shut every door!”

“My giiiiirlfriends are guest starring on #blackish Tuesday, October 8!,” Ross captions the video. “We haven’t all been together on camera since 2006. These are women I grew up with and love deeply and it was easy tap back into the magic of our chemistry and how much we love each other.”

She continues, “It was giggles on top of giggles on top of giggles. Girlfriends ran for 8 years and was important to so many people. Being able to merge the worlds of @blackishabc and Girlfriends was surreal for me and so much fun.”

As Ellis notes, the cast hasn’t been seen on camera in over a decade. The show, which has been considered one of the most influential black comedies in television, ran for eight years on UPN and The CW, with it final episode airing in 2008. 

According to Entertainment Weekly, the episode will follow Ellis character Rainbow who brings her daughter Diane to “meet women in her feminist group” after learning that she and her mother-in-law don’t believe in feminism.

Black-ish‘s sixth season premieres Sept. 24 at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
