Sheila E. will release a new song inspired by Prince immediately following the BET Awards tribute to the late Minneapolis icon.

The drummer/percussionist, who was romantically involved with Prince, tells Billboard that the track is a ballad named “Girl Meets Boy.” Sheila E. reveals that she had been recording a dance album, but that was put a hold when Prince passed away on April 21.

“It just wasn’t the music I wanted out right now,” she says. “It’s not how I’m feeling; everything has changed. So a couple of weeks ago, I decided to write a whole new album. And it feels right.” She says her new album is influenced by her relationship with Prince and “driven by the sense of loss that so many are feeling.”

Sheila, whose full surname is Escovedo, remembers that she was so traumatized by his death that she was unsure whether she could participate in the tribute.

“In the first conversations about it, I couldn’t even say his name,” she says. “When I started putting the music together, it was hard for me to listen to anything. It’s actually been a part of my healing now, trying to figure out what I was going to play and what would be OK to make sure I would get through it. But it’s going to be fun.”

Escovedo will be featured along with The Roots, D’Angelo and Janelle Monae in the Prince tribute at the BET Awards, taking place on June 26 in Los Angeles.
