Ever wonder what it’s like for a songwriter to give their music away to major stars? Sam Dew, who has written for artists like Mary J. Blige and Marsha Ambrosius, is revealing how fulfilling it was to hear Usher‘s vocals on Wale‘s new hit, “The Matrimony.”

“Usher sang it so much better than I did,” says Dew in an interview with Complex, “I love sending stuff to Usher, because it always sounds better than me.”

When asked if he ever gets upset when he gives away a great song, he replies: “I’ve accepted that [the song] not mine the minute its written.”

Sam also shared what it was like to work with Rihanna. “I got to meet her and she was really chill, it was just one of those things,” he says of their collaboration on “Numb” lifted from 2012’s Unapologetic.

Aside form his writing credits, Dew has just released his debut EP Damn Sue, available in stores now.
