Stevie Wonder is among the stars who will be at New York City’s famed Apollo Theater to take part in a live television event hosted by Reverend Al Sharpton that will air Friday at 8 p.m. ET on MSNBC. Advancing the Dream: Live from the Apollo will salute the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and will feature interviews and conversations with a variety celebrities who will discuss a selection of relevant issues involving civil rights.
Among the topics expected to be covered during the two-hour program are education, workers’ rights and job prospects for people of various ethnic backgrounds. Wonder and such other luminaries as Magic Johnson, Condoleezza Rice and Tyler Perry also will share their own stories about their struggles to become successful and their plans for the future.
In conjunction with the TV special, MSNBC.com will offer backstage footage and interviews that will begin streaming at 7 p.m. ET. The website also will offer visitors the chance to take part in discussions via online social media.
MSNBC’s Advancing the Dream event marks the finale of an initiative Sharpton launched in July at the 2013 Essence Music Festival “to highlight efforts in communities across America to expand fairness, equality and opportunity.”
