Did MTV VMA Stunt with Miley Help Break Up Robin Thicke’s Marriage?

by

Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic for MTVWhen Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus put on their twerk-tastic performance on the MTV VMAs last year, seemingly offending everyone in the known universe, many wondered how Robin’s wife, Paula Patton, felt about it.  At the time, she said she was fine with it.  Now, that performance is being held up as one of the reasons Robin and Paula have announced their separation.

While sources tell US Weekly magazine that the split has been a long time coming, the VMA performance apparently brought things to a head. “The Miley Cyrus fiasco was a big test of their relationship,” a source tells the magazine. “He asked her to help him out as a friend and a wife, and defend him and the performance. He begged her to speak out for him and be there for him. She agreed to be the good wife after he begged and pleaded.”

Paula did defend Robin in numerous interviews, at one point telling Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, “It wasn’t a naked show…I don’t really know what the big deal is.”

After the furor died down a bit, the source adds, Robin “asked [Paula] her to stick with him through awards season, and she agreed. She attended the Grammys with him as a favor.”

Meanwhile, TMZ reports that Robin canceled a show on his current tour so he could fly to Canada, where Paula is filming a movie, and beg her to reconsider her decision to end their marriage.  Though they had a long heart-to-heart, TMZ claims, Robin realized that Paula wasn’t changing her mind, so he reluctantly agreed. The next day, the site says, Robin canceled another show so he could spend time with their son, Julian.
