SZA, Kendrick Lamar and Khalid land on TIME magazine’s Top Ten Albums of 2017 list

by

Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA RecordsTIME magazine has determined its Top Ten Albums of 2017, and landing at number one is SZA with her debut album, Ctrl.

The publication notes that the New Jersey artist “rose to prominence with witty songs marked by gorgeously sparse R&B production and ironclad melodies.”

It continues: “Like all the best artists, her experience is so specific that it rises to the level of universality: She may be one of a kind, but she’s speaking the truth of a whole generation.”

Kendrick Lamar and Khalid are also on the list at #2 and #4, respectively.

TIME describes Kendrick’s Grammy-nominated album DAMN. as “insistent” and “incisive,” and adds that the rapper “doesn’t need gimmicks to elevate the power of his art.”

Khalid’s debut album American Teen is described as “buoyant but relaxed alt-R&B, musing on the joys and pitfalls of first love, tech-fueled communication and dealing with parents.” …On American Teen, Khalid proves himself thoughtful and self-aware beyond his years.”

In late November, all three stars were announced as nominees for the 60th annual Grammy Awards. Kendrick gained seven nominations, while SZA and Khalid scored five apiece.

The 2018 Grammys will be presented January 28th at New York’s Madison Square Garden and broadcast live on CBS.
