Courtesy of VH1Tamar Braxton chimed in on a Twitter conversation about pay discrepancies and changing Black narratives in reality TV.
The conversation began when a fan wrote that they felt Tamar’s Braxton Family Values reality show has become more about “drama,” compared to its normally “funny” banter when it initially aired in 2007.
Tamar retweeted the comments and added, “[And] still more DRAMA till this day. But that’s what happens when it’s all white executives having all the power & telling your black family stories. I will get justice for my family and all other black reality shows with the narrative of ABP [Angry Black People] & negativity. It’s terrible & I’m tired.”
The To Catch a Beautician star continued, “I too feel the same way. It used to be funny and fun. But some will say well you said or did the negative things. True, but now true. It’s the context. And that’s why they do it. To ruin your credibility.”
Fans suggested bringing the show to a Black-owned network, tagging OWN, TV One, and Bounce TV, but Tamar said first we need to talk about pay and raised questions about another popular reality TV show.
“I 100 percent wrote the [Braxton Family Values] theme song … where is the coin?” she tweeted. “Our show is on Netflix. Where is the coin? 10 years on the air; we make 75 percent LESS than the Kardashians. How come there are no villains on that show?”
Fans continued to tweet supportive messages about Tamar and her family’s longstanding history in reality TV, but are open to changes for any forthcoming seasons.
One fan said, “Switch it over, make a new deal. Rename the show, take it to a new network or go to Facebook; we will watch it.”
