Plus 1 Music Group/21 Entertainment/Entertainment OneTamia was among the artists performing at Black Girls Rock which aired Sunday on BET, and the six-time Grammy nominee loved being part of the annual salute to Black Girl Magic for the first time.

“It is such a special event,” she tells ABC Radio. “The best part was being in the room with so many inspiring people and there was just so much love in the room and so much, like, amazing energy. It’s a great event to be in and to participate in, whether you’re performing or you’re in the audience taking it all in.”

Janet Jackson, Naomi Campbell, Mary J. Blige, and Lena Waithe were among the honorees at the celebration hosted by Queen Latifah at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

In addition to Tamia, Yolanda Adams, H.E.R, Fantasia, Jazmine Sullivan, JAY-Z protege Victory Boyd also performed. Tamia says it was very special bonding with so many talented women.

“Yolanda Adams and H.E.R. and…artists that you connect with and you admire as well and you’re just sort of appreciating each other’s music,” she says, adding that it’s  “always a great thing that you’re in a space where everyone is just so appreciative of each other and has been inspired by each other,” she says.

On the show, Tamia sang “So Into You” from her 1998 self-titled debut album, and also her latest single, ”Leave it Smokin’” from her new album, Passion Like Fire, which was released September 7.
