It was a SURPRISE OF A LIFETIME for nearly 400 graduating seniors at Morehouse College this morning (Sunday 5/19/19)! Austin, Texas based billionaire Robert F. Smith, who was the commencement speaker announced that he would be paying off all of their student loans!!
Smith, who made his fortune as a technology investor had already announced a $1.5 million gift to the HBCU, during his address to the graduates announced that his family was providing a grant that would cover the student debt of the entire Class of 2019.
The announcement elicited the biggest cheers of the morning.

One mother in the crowd said that her son’s loans were at about $70,000, and told the Atlanta Constitution Journal that ” I feel like it’s Mother’s Day all over again.”
The gift has been estimated at $40 million.
