Earlier this month, The Weeknd announced that his new album, Beauty Behind the Madness, will arrive in August and now, he’s revealing his ambition for the album.

In an interview with The New York Times, the singer spoke on evolving as an artist.  “I felt I had to change who I was,” he told the publication. “These kids, you know, they don’t have a Michael Jackson. They don’t have a Prince. They don’t have a Whitney [Houston]. Who else is there? Who else can really do it at this point?”

The singer also has strong desires to become the “biggest in the world” and knows that there’s a lot riding on his next project. “It’s about me being who I am and stepping out of my comfort zone to try to feel something else besides what I’ve been feeling the past four years.” He continued, “Ups and downs. In my past albums, there were never ups.”

Beauty Behind the Madness drops August 28.
