by

ABC/Randy HolmesAlicia Keys‘ newest creative venture will be co-producing a film based on the life of the late, legendary choreographer Alvin Ailey

Deadline reports that film distribution company Fox Searchlight closed a deal to develop the movie that’s fully supported by the Ailey organization

The rights to writer Jennifer Dunning’s biography Alvin Ailey: A Life in Dance were also secured for the movie.

In creating the film, Alicia and the other producers of the movie will work closely with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Artistic Director Robert Battle and its Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison.

Born in 1931, Alvin Ailey became one of the foremost 20th choreographers; he is credited with popularizing modern dance and bringing African-Americans to the forefront of dance on an international scale.

Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City in 1958.

He also received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1988 and a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.

Ailey died in 1989 at the age of 58 from a terminal blood disorder.
