Tinashe opens up about being pitted against Any Black Girl in R&B

by

ABC/Randy Holmes Tinashe is getting ready to kick off her highly anticipated Tour For You next month. The “2 On” songstress got really deep in a conversation on E!’s Just the Sip series, talking about everything from her music career, to healing from her breakup with basketball player Ben Simmons, to being pitted against “any black girl” in the industry today.

“First, it was the superstars, which was like, ‘Whoa,'” she said. “How are you guys gonna pit me against these people? It would be, ‘Tinashe, the new Aaliyah.’ ‘Tinashe, the next Beyoncé.’ I would be like, ‘You guys are setting me up left and right. These people are icons.'”

But she said the comparisons then moved from icons to other artists who had similar music styles or looks.

“It started off there, and then it was everyone,” she continued. “I literally could name six different people at one point…it’s been Tinashe versus Jhené [Aiko], Tinashe versus FKA Twigs, Tinashe versus all the R&B girls. Literally any black girl…Cassie. All the ‘whisper’ singers, whatever that means.”

Kicking off April 20th in Detroit, the tour will be Tinashe’s third as a headliner.  She’ll be performing songs from her four studio albums, including her November release Songs for You, which came out on her own label, Tinashe Music.
