Ty Dolla $ign explains what it takes to make a hit record

by

NabilAfter collaborations with the biggest names in the industry such as Nicki MinajMegan Thee Stallion, Skrillex, Post Malone, and Jeremih, among others, Ty Dolla $ign knows what it takes to make a hit record.

In a Billboard questionnaire, the Grammy-nominated hitmaker says when it comes to music, he’s “all over the place.”

“I’m never just on one thing, like, ‘Everybody was only vibing to club music, and when the pandemic hit, club music didn’t make sense anymore,'” Ty says. “There are so many new people that I’ve been hearing that are incredible. It’s dope where music is going.”

Ty likes working with different instruments such as a piano or different guitars to create “different vibes, different sounds, different frequencies” and “different tones,” as heard on his latest album, Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, which topped Billboard’s Top R&B Albums.

He says “a lot” of his songs come from his ability to “open my mouth, come with a melody, come with words and it’s there.”

“The one song where I felt like I knew it was going to go was ‘Paranoid,'” says Ty about the track from his 2014 EP, Beach House, which features rapper B.o.B. “That was the third song I made on that beat, and I just felt like that was it. I felt like everybody would want to be a part of it when it comes on.”

He also mentioned his SZA-assisted collaboration “Hit Different”, which peaked at #10 on Billboard’sMainstream R&B/Hip Hop song chart. Initially, he didn’t think the song would be as successful “because it was slow, and slower songs are always a bit tricky.”

But where exactly does his gift for crafting chart-topping hit records come from? Ty says, “It comes from God and goes through me.”
