50 Cent performed his 2003 hit “In Da Club” during the Super Bowl halftime show, and the song also was playing when Usher and his girlfriend, Jenn Goicoechea, welcomed his fourth child, Sire, who was born September 29, 2021.
The eight-time Grammy winner revealed the news via a video posted on Instagram around the time of Sire’s birth, and in a new interview with Extra, he explained why he chose that song.
“It was befitting of the moment…I felt like I wanted to have a little humor and also energy in the moment,” Usher said. “There were many songs played throughout the entire process and I was really, really, really, calculated on how I curated that list ’cause I did terrible the first time.”
The “Nice & Slow” singer regretted that he wasn’t able to play music when his daughter, Sovereign Bo, was born in 2020. “The problem was I didn’t have Wi-Fi.” For Sire’s birth, Usher says, “I had a speaker, I came with a playlist…nothing was stopping me.”
Meanwhile, Usher will continue his Las Vegas residency this summer with a special immersive experience at the Dolby Live theater at Park MGM.
“It’s different…If your expectations were to experience the hit records that you heard, you will get that,” he notes. “If your expectation is to be immersed in an incredible night of a journey through music, you’re going to get that.”
He adds, “If you want to participate and play and get out of the comfort of just being from the audience to the stage looking at it being that you want to be involved, there’s a way to do it.”
Tickets for Usher’s residency, which resumes in July, go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time on the Park MGM website.
