Usher teases new album, compares new single to MJ/McCartney duet

by

ABC/Image Group LAUsher plans to ring in 2020 Tuesday night by performing live from the Allstate Fan Fest in New Orleans, and you’ll be able to see a chunk of the performance on ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.  But the Grammy-winner has big plans for the coming year.

“Wait till you hear this new album!” he tells Billboard, adding, “I’m really enjoying the new music that I’ve worked on, and really excited for you guys to hear it.

The first taste of the new album, which will be the follow up to 2016’s Hard II Love, is Usher’s new duet with Ella Mai, “Don’t Waste My Time,” which dropped a few weeks back.

“When I listen to it, I hear a lot of tones of Michael Jackson in it,” Usher says, noting that it reminded him of “The Girl Is Mine,” the duet with Paul McCartney that was MJ’s first single from Thriller.

“It sounds similar to this song,” Usher says. “If this forthcoming album has any expectations of being as big as that, I mean, that’s a good start, right? But I do think it’s just a really great record that has great positive energy, and brings both of our audiences together.”

“There’s more to come,” he tells Billboard. “If you like this, stay tuned.”
