Warwick SaintVanessa Williams and her daughter, Lion Babe frontwoman Jillian Hervey, talk about love, life and hair in the January 2017 issue of Essence magazine, proving that wisdom runs in the family.
“You have to go through the fire. Avoiding the pain is why most people never resolve it. You have to dig deep, sit in it and ugly-cry. Pretending it’s not there and keeping busy are a way of avoiding it,” says Vanessa on what it takes to survive any of life’s setbacks.
As for love, the singer-actress says that when it came to marrying her husband, Jim Skrip, the decision was “one of those easy, easy things.” “It was fantastic,” Williams added.
And when it comes to beauty, Jillian shed light on her famous, naturally curly mane, saying that she embraced her look at an early age, which then led to welcoming a career in singing.
“Once I claimed my natural hair, I was like, ‘Okay, now I feel much more open to try singing and other ways of performing,'” said Hervey.
You can pick up the January issue of Essence, featuring Vanessa and Jillian on the cover, on newsstands Friday.
