R&B songstress Victoria Monet is opening up about her vulnerable EP, Jaguar.  Monet says “it took a lot” to share her inner feelings with her fans.

“It took a lot of trial and error [and] discovering who I am as a person, who I am as a woman, what I want to stand for and speak about and be unapologetic about,” she tells ABC Audio. “So I think what you’re hearing is just me being grown.”

For Jaguar, the “Moment” singer stepped forward after years of writing Grammy-winning hit records for Ariana Grande, Chris Brown and more.

“I have been doing this for a really long time in the shadows and kind of behind the scenes, so I think maybe sometimes when people hear me for the first time, they think that, oh, she’s just this outspoken, brave person sexually,” the 27-year-old says. “But really, if you go dig back into my first few records, it would feel different. And I think that’s just the progression of my womanhood [but I’m sure] that’ll probably change as I grow.”

Monet adds that she was “feeling dominant sexually” when creating Jaguar.

“I just wanted to explore that and kind of juxtapose that with the softer voice that I have and the beautiful melodies that the instruments surround me…just kind of mixed the words up,” she says.

The expecting mom says “the pressure is on to deliver” her next two projects in 2021, which will complete a full body of work.

“I have a Jaguar part two and three,” Monet continues. “I’m excited to see if we can actually tour next year because I would love to tour [those] projects. So depending on what that looks like, that may be in the works for 2021 as well.”
