Courtesy of the Rock and Roll Hall of FameWhitney Houston and The Notorious B.I.G will be posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  The iconic singer and the legendary rapper were both chosen after being nominated for the first time.

Rock Hall President and CEO Greg Harris says Whitney’s ability to handle a diverse range of music makes her comparable to other iconic Hall members like Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson and Aretha Franklin.

“They could deliver soulful ballads and hard-hitting dance numbers, rock and roll, soul, funk all rolled together,” he notes.

Houston is the first artist to have seven consecutive number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and the first woman to enter the Billboard 200 album chart at number one.  In addition, she’s in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most-awarded female artist, and has sold some 200 million records worldwide.

Harris says The Notorious B.I.G. deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame because of “his versatile rapping style, his beats, the way that he could spit words, but also the lyrics themselves.”

Biggie, the Brooklyn MC born Christopher George Latore Wallace, will become only the second solo rapper in the Hall of Fame, following the late Tupac Shakur, who became a member in 2017. He remains one of the most influential hip-hop artists in history. Biggie received Grammy nominations for his classics “Big Poppa” and “Hypnotize,” while his second album, Life After Death, was up for Best Rap Album.

Houston and the B.I.G. will be inducted along with rockers Nine Inch NailsThe Doobie BrothersT. Rex and Depeche Mode on Saturday, May 2, in Cleveland. The 2020 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will air live for the first time starting at 8 p.m. ET on HBO.

You can also buy tickets to see the ceremony in person starting February 27 at 10 a.m. ET via RockHall.com.
