Whitney Houston’s Emmy Award Up for Sale in Probable Illegal Auction

by

Legacy RecordingsThe late music superstar Whitney Houston won many awards during her lifetime, including multiple Grammy, American Music and Billboard Music Awards.

However, she only acquired one Emmy for her performance at the 28th Annual Grammy Awards in 1986  — and it is in a current court battle between the Television Academy and the self-proclaimed “World’s Largest Collectibles Auctioneer,” Heritage Auctions.

TMZ reports that the Television Academy went to court this morning to put a restraining order against Heritage Auctions. The auction house has scheduled the award’s sale for this Friday.

According to TMZ, the Television Academy states that this sale is illegal, due to decades-long regulations that are listed on the bottom of every Emmy awarded between 1978 to 1994.

One of the rules states that “the Emmy statuette is the property of and all rights are reserved by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.”

Another lists, “if a recipient or the recipient’s heir or successor in interest proposes to sell or otherwise dispose of the Emmy statuette, such persons shall be obligated to return the statuette to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.”

A representative of Heritage Auctions reportedly told TMZ that they asked the Television Academy for Houston’s signature on numerous accounts, but never received a response.

Heritage Auctions plans to go ahead with the sale, unless they are denied by a judge.
