Black All-Female Rowing Team is Making History
December 23, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
KRNB – Collectively known as Team Antigua Island Girls, the 5-woman (4 team-members and 1 alternate) is the first Black women and first all-Black team to compete in the 3000 nautical mile Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. It’s rowing competition that has historically taken teams from 29 days to 3 months to complete. The women representing the sister islands of Antiqua and Barbuda, and with no rowing experienced to speak of before this year, set there sights on what’s considered the world’s toughest rowing competition all for the sake of charity.
Their goal is to raise $150,000 dollars for Cottage of Hope, a transitional home for neglected, abandoned, and abused girls.
As reporter Tanya A. Christian writes, “Give a Black woman a challenge and watch her rise to the occasion.”
Read more about the team comprised of Elvira Bell, Christal Clashing, Samara Emmanuel, and Kevinia Francis who say that the challenge is a “culmination of hard work, sacrifice, prayer, and grit.”
