The story of Henrietta Lacks now known as “The Mother of Modern Medicine” finally made it to the screen for all to see. Many people had never heard of her but have benefited from her stolen tissue and her cells hat researchers have used for the past 60 years. After the HBO special this weekend many more people will learn who she is and how she changed the world of biomedical research thanks to Oprah and HARPO Productions. The story is upsetting and extraordinary at the same time. Henrietta never authorized for doctors to take tissue sample from her and use them for research. John Hopkins University Hospital made millions from her stolen cells but never compensated her family.
