Serena Williams Scores 5th Female Athlete of the Year Award Most female athletes would see receiving the Associated Press’ Female Athlete of the Year award as a high honor that comes only once in a lifetime. But for Serena Williams, it’s just another day in her fabled career on the court. The 37-year-old tennis star on Wednesday was named as the award’s recipient for the fifth time. She also received the honor in 2002, 2009, 2013 and 2015. Serena was selected by members and editors based on her remarkable return to tennis including reaching  the finales Wimbledon and U.S. Open in 2018.Although Williams didn’t win any major tournaments in 2018, organizers of the annual awards say she was worthy of the honor for returning to the WTA following a health scare that arose from childbirth complications.
