Despite the rumors circulating that black people are immune to the coronavirus, early data shows otherwise. For example, according to data released Friday morning, African Americans made up almost half of Milwaukee County’s 945 cases and 81% of its 27 deaths in a county whose population is 26% black. Another example is in Michigan, where the state’s black population is 14%. African Americans made up 35% of cases and 40% of deaths. In Louisiana, 40% of deaths have occurred in Orleans Parish, consisting of mainly black residents. One of the reasons this is happening is because many black communities didn’t pay the warnings much attention. Another reason is a natural response to ignore government restrictions, which once included the painful memories of segregation and mass incarceration. It’s unknown why the government didn’t include the race of COVID-19 patients. In the meantime, states are doing it on their own.
