Karen Bass Becomes First Woman Elected Los Angeles Mayor

Hong) In a city torn apart by racial tensions and fed up with homelessness, Karen Bass, a veteran Democratic congresswoman, was elected as Los Angeles’ first female mayor on Wednesday, November 16.  “The people of Los Angeles have sent a clear message,” said Bass. “It is time for change and it is time for urgency.” Rick Caruso, a rich real estate developer, was Ms. Bass’ fiercest opponent in the campaign, which had been too close to call for more than a week following the election. Bass received more than 53% of the vote in the Los Angeles County elections on Wednesday, with the results significantly favoring her.
