Dwayne Wade sat down with Ellen DeGeneres to discuss how he and his wife, Gabrielle Union, came together after their child came out as transgender.
“We take our roles and responsibilities as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question, our child comes home with an issue, our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information we can, to give the best feedback we can. And that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it,” he said.
He also says that after learning about his 12-year-old son, Zion, wanting to be referenced as “she” and “her” and be called “Zaya,” Union reached out to the cast of Pose and they both got familiar with the LGBTQ+ community so they would have answers for their daughter.
Dwayne says he told Zaya after she came out, ‘You are a leader. It’s our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.’ Wow that has got to be a hard decision to make concerning your, but in the end, you love your child and you support them to the end.
