The Senate has confirmed President Biden’s pick for Secretary of Defense, retired Gen. Lloyd Austin. Austin’s nomination was confirmed by an overwhelming 93-2 margin, making him the first black Defense Secretary in U.S. history. Austin commanded U.S. forces in the Middle East before retiring in 2016. He was granted a special Congressional waiver that allows him to serve as Defense secretary despite retiring fewer than seven years ago.
