Natalie Cole was laid to rest yesterday after a star-studded home-going service at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles. Cole who died on New Year’s Eve was mourned and celebrated by Gladys Knight, Johnny Mathis, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Angela Bassett.
Stevie Wonder and gospel singer Kurt Carr sang and Chaka Khan who was scheduled to sing apologized to the audience for not being able to sing because of a cold, she spoke instead along with Lionel Richie and Smokey Robinson.
While most of the speakers focused on Natalie Cole the singer, it was her son Robbie who talked about Natalie Cole the mother.
“What a woman,” Robbie said after carrying his mother’s Bible to the podium, according to the Associated Press. “She taught me how to love. She had my back every time when I needed it. The greatest gift she ever gave me was Jesus. I cannot wait until that day that I see you again.”
Cole was buried next to her parents and sister.
