mixed-Ish star Tika Sumpter has launched the Sugaberry lifestyle brand and podcast with black mothers in mind, after her experience during her pregnancy three years ago.

When she was expecting her daughter, Ella, Sumpter said she found it difficult to find content about motherhood for women of color and the unique hardships they may face.

Filling the void herself, she partnered with her best friend and media exec Thai Randolph to make Sugaberry come to life. Randolph also acts as general manager for Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud digital comedy brand.

Randolph told Essence that Sugaberry is “the brown mama’s guide to the sweet life.” The lifestyle brand is dedicated to modern moms of color, serving as “a daily love letter to black and brown moms everywhere.”  She adds that her goal and Tika’s is to build a platform where “motherhood could be enjoyed and not endured” for black mothers.

The lifestyle brand also launched with a podcast titled The Suga, with surprise guests such as Dr. Imani Walker from Married to Medicine: Los Angeles

Topics discussed will include everything from “mental health to the indulgence of enjoying motherhood and making space for oneself, regardless of where you are on the spectrum,” according to Sumpter.

“We don’t only wear the badge of strong Black moms,” she says.  “We have vulnerabilities and things we need to talk about. We have to put our own mask on before we put [on] anybody else’s.”

The Suga podcast is available on all platforms now.
