Alicia Keys Says There Is a High, Unrealistic Standard of Beauty for Women

by

Miller Mobley exclusively for The Hollywood ReporterDuring The Hollywood Reporters first-ever songwriters’ roundtable discussion, which included John Legend, Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake and Sting, Alicia Keys discussed the impractical standards of beauty that women are expected to follow.

“The most important thing about it is that for women, there is a really, ridiculously high, unrealistic standard of what beauty is, and it’s heavy. It’s heavy, it’s hard. We’re so brainwashed even as women that it gets confusing,” she said.

However, the award-winning artist’s advice for women is more sacred than skin deep.

“The most important thing, obviously, is that you honor yourself and understand what is important to you as a person, and that has nothing to do with makeup — wear it, don’t wear it. Do what feels good to you as a woman, as a human being. Express yourself. And don’t judge each other so much. Whatever this person chooses, that’s beautiful too,” added Keys.

Alicia launcher her #NoMakeupMovement this summer. Since then, the vocalist has abstained from wearing any makeup on her face both away from and in front of the camera.
